Art and Design & Technology

Head of Department: Mrs Gardner

Creative Art

Key Stage 3:

Students develop a broad range of artistic skills through drawing, painting and a variety of media and techniques. Sketchbooks are used to record observations, develop and refine ideas, experiment and evaluate progress.

Students explore the work of artists and designers from different periods and cultures, developing their ability to analyse artwork using appropriate subject-specific vocabulary. Through observation, imagination and research, students create work in both 2D and 3D, building confidence, technical control and individuality.

Projects include both classwork and homework, with each year building on previously developed skills and knowledge.

Key Stage 4:

At Key Stage 4, students build on their Key Stage 3 skills, developing greater independence, creativity and confidence. Students explore a range of artists, designers, media and techniques while working towards the four GCSE Assessment Objectives:

· AO1 – Develop: Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources.

· AO2 – Refine: Refine work by exploring and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes.

· AO3 – Record: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses.

· AO4 – Present: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions.

Year 10:

Students develop their skills through a range of projects, exploring different media, techniques and artists. They build a portfolio of work while developing their ability to research, experiment, evaluate and refine ideas, with increasing independence and personal expression.

Year 11:

Students build on their Year 10 skills, with a greater emphasis on independence, refinement and personal responses. They complete the GCSE externally set assignment, applying the four Assessment Objectives to develop, refine, record and present a personal and meaningful final outcome.

Design Technology

The Design & Technology Department encompasses a range of creative and practical disciplines, including Design & Technology, Food Preparation and Nutrition, Textiles, Graphics and 3D Design. Students develop creativity, practical skills and problem-solving abilities through designing, making and evaluating products for real-world contexts

Key Stage 3
Throughout Key Stage 3, students experience a range of specialist areas, developing practical skills, creativity and confidence through a variety of design and make projects.

Year 7 – Foundations of Design & Technology
Students rotate through Textiles, Food Technology and Resistant Materials, developing essential practical skills and safe working practices. They learn basic sewing, food preparation and workshop techniques while exploring materials, nutrition, design and construction. Students develop their ability to design, make and evaluate practical outcomes.

Year 8 – Developing Design Skills
Students rotate through Architecture, Resistant Materials and Graphics, developing creative problem-solving and digital design skills. Projects include architectural modelling, puzzle design and manufacture, laser cutting and interactive pop-up books. Students develop accuracy, creativity and an understanding of user needs, functionality and sustainability.

Year 9

Students expand their initiative and their attention is drawn to the needs of the end user and the effect of their product on the environment. Textiles uses recycling in the design and make project and in Resistant materials students are introduced to CAD/CAM.

Key Stage 4

GCSE 3D Design

At Key Stage 4, students build on their creative and practical skills, developing greater independence, confidence and understanding of the 3D design process. Students explore a

range of materials, processes, techniques and designers while developing personal responses to design briefs.

The course is structured around four GCSE Assessment Objectives:

· AO1 – Develop: Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources.

· AO2 – Refine: Refine work by exploring and experimenting with appropriate materials, techniques and processes.

· AO3 – Record: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses.

· AO4 – Present: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions.

Year 10
Students develop their skills through a range of 3D design projects, exploring materials, processes and techniques. They investigate the work of designers and practitioners, develop and refine ideas, and create practical outcomes through modelling and making. Students begin to build a portfolio demonstrating the four GCSE Assessment Objectives.

Year 11
Students build on their Year 10 skills, with a greater emphasis on independence, refinement and personal expression. They complete their GCSE externally set assignment, applying the four Assessment Objectives to research, develop, refine, record and present a personal and meaningful 3D design outcome.

GCSE Hospitality & Catering

Students develop practical and theoretical knowledge of the hospitality and catering industry, exploring food preparation, nutrition, food safety, customer needs and the wider hospitality sector.

Year 10
Students develop their knowledge and practical skills through increasingly complex tasks, exploring ingredients, preparation techniques, nutrition, food safety, menu planning and the needs of different customers.

Year 11
Students apply their knowledge and practical skills through assessed coursework and examination preparation, developing their ability to plan, prepare and evaluate food products for specific hospitality and catering contexts.
